Mike Heinsdorf: US Nationals Day #1

Day 1 of Worlds is over and the unseasonably warm temperatures on the Chesapeake have continued. I honestly don't think I've ever sweat so much in a sailboat as I did today and on Saturday (Saturday was worse). I can't comment on Sunday as I was resting my head after a wedding (which in true sailing style, the wedding party wore flip-flops, guzzled spiced rum and proceeded to get thrown out of the hotel bar at 1AM) and then attended the Annapolis Boat Show. But it was hot at the boat show, especially in the big top tents. A few fans were making a halfhearted attempt at tossing some air around, but it wasn't really helping. From what I heard, it was a bobbing contest on the water.

It's hard to believe that it's October on the Chesapeake. It feels like dead August with temperatures in the high eighties and overcast skies. Wind today wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. We did get enough for the RC, who is doing a great job at keeping us busy, to hoist the "lifejackets required" flag (praise be that they managed to scrounge up a postponement flag that's bigger than a piece of toilet paper), however it died down a bit halfway through the third race. Three races was kind of rough, I had to whip out the foam sword and beat my crew into actually hiking for the third race. Luckily the water was flat.

Since this weather is continuing, I would like to give a word of advice to our English, Irish and Scottish friends: sunblock. I don't know how much it's used over there, but for this regatta, it's going to be a necessity. I highly suggest Coppertone or Banana Boat....mostly because, in anticipation of the great rush on sunblock that is going to be happening this week I put in an order on my blackberry from the boat for stock in the parent companies.
