1985 IAA MINUTES
Held on 14th August, 1985 at Herne Bay Sailing Club, Herne Bay, England

Present: David Innes BAA (President)

Dennis Sherwood CAA ( Treasurer)
Roger Thomas USAA
David Wallerstein USAA
John Luard USAA
David Treisman CAA
Ron James BAA
Peter Fontes BAA
Ken Ayrton BAA (Secretary)

1. Apologies for absence:

David Medhurst CAA
Riaz Latifullah USAA

2. Minutes of previous meeting:

These were adopted as submitted after it was noted that Charles Coleman (not Chapman) was in attendance)

Proposed: Dennis Sherwood

Seconded: Roger Thomas

3. President's Report:

David Innes welcomed everyone to Herne Bay and hoped that the Championship would prove to be a memorable and enjoyable occasion in every way. He hoped that the fleet split was considered a, good way of limiting the numbers in the Championship and yet still giving good racing for everyone. He was also pleased to note that there were entries from both Ireland and Cyprus on this occasion.

The President concluded his report by thanking everyone for their support and hoped to see the Class continue to flourish over the years.

4. Treasurer's Report:

Dennis Sherwood reported that finances were healthy even though the BAA owed their dues for 4 years. The report was adopted. Ron James suggested that the bulk of the funds could be on deposit. It was also suggested that the funds could be used, if required, in connection with the Production and distribution of the Year Book when it finally appears in 1986.

Action: - D. Sherwood

5.  Constitution:

No changes were tabled.

6. Class Rules and Specifications:

6.1 The Specifications committee tabled two amendments:

  1. Rule 3.2.6

The requirement for the check at Station 7, 600 mm each side of the centreline of the boat to be deleted.

This had proved a very tight tolerance for a builder in wood to work to and the measurement point was also well above the waterline which made it unnecessary as the rule is an underwater hull shape check.

  1. Rule 3.2.20

The measurement of the transom dishing to be tightened up by inserting a further requirement that the depth of cut out must not be more than 75 mm below shoreline at a point 200 mm each side of the centreline.

These changes were approved and submissions would be made to the RYA to be considered at their meeting in October.

Action: Ken Ayrton

6.2 Roger Thomas raised the point that foam reinforced plastic boats being inherently buoyant do not require addition foam as is normal in a g.r.p. boat.

6.3 A suggestion was put forward by Bob Harwood that experiments should be made with Kevlar foam cored centreboards but after lengthy discussion this was not approved.

6.4 John Luard suggested that standard sailing instructions would be of great use to the Class and he would be prepared to produce them. He asked for the BAA and CAA to send him copies of sailing instructions they have used recently to enable him to produce a set incorporating the ideas of all the member associations. The committee looked forward to receiving his suggestions in the near future.

Action: D. Sherwood

P. Fontes

7. Sail Numbers and Membership:

  1. U.K. very few new boats were built in 1984 but 14 had already been produced in 1985. It is now very difficult to find a good boat on the second-hand market. Current membership of the Association is now 356.
  1. CANADA: 28 new boats have been built this year. Ontario Yachts have up to now only sold direct but at last are coming round to the idea of having a number of retail outlets which it is hoped should increase the sale of new boats. Membership of the Association stands at 330.

7.3 U.S.A.: Membership stands at 200+ but only 4 new boats have been registered this year. Roger Thomas suggested that a billing system was a much better way of collecting annual subscriptions and reported 95% success. With many members rejoining after two or three years when bills were sent to them using a three year old membership list for addresses.

8. Worlds 1987:

Roger Thomas reported that it was intended to hold them at either Gwynn Island Or Norfolk, Virginia, probably in October. If any U.K. sailors were shipping boats Hapco would be prepared to pick them up.

9. I.A.A. Year Book

Dennis Sherwood produced a proof of the year book and had a quote of ~ 5800 for printing. Beefeater Gin would be in a position to provide the fund in 1986 and it was hoped to publish early in the year.

Membership lists for 1985 were required as soon as Possible from each Association.
